AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry Study Guide Maker

AP Chemistry asks you to connect particle-level models to data and calculations. According to the College Board, the exam has two sections of equal weight: 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes (50%), and 7 free-response questions in 1 hour 45 minutes (50%) — 3 long-answer questions worth 10 points each and 4 short-answer questions worth 4 points each. It's a hybrid digital exam: multiple choice in Bluebook, free-response answers handwritten in a paper booklet. Calculators are permitted and reference information is provided. The 2027 exam is on May 6, 2027.

The course has 9 units. Properties of Substances and Mixtures (18–22%) and Acids and Bases (11–15%) carry the largest weighting ranges; the other seven units are each 7–9%.

Study Guide Maker turns your class slides, text-based PDFs, Word docs or notes into a guide for each unit: an outline, key concepts tagged to the page or slide they came from, a glossary, practice questions and flashcards. Choose the AP/IB level. Type key equations into your notes if they only appear as images, and pair the guide with free-response practice from AP Central.

Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration is how cells turn the chemical energy in glucose into ATP. It happens in three stages — glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain — and releases carbon dioxide and water as by-products.

  1. 1. Overview of cellular respiration

    • Overall equation: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 → 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (ATP + heat).p. 1
    • Aerobic respiration needs oxygen and yields far more ATP than fermentation.p. 1
  2. 2. Glycolysis

    • Glucose is split into two pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm, producing a net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH.p. 2
    • Glycolysis does not require oxygen.p. 2
  3. 3. Krebs (citric acid) cycle

    • Takes place in the mitochondrial matrix; each acetyl-CoA produces 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, 1 ATP and 2 CO2.p. 3
  4. 4. Electron transport chain

    • Located in the inner mitochondrial membrane; NADH and FADH2 donate electrons that pump H+ ions and drive ATP synthase.p. 4
    • Oxygen is the final electron acceptor and forms water.p. 4

Frequently asked questions

How is the AP Chemistry exam structured?

Per the College Board: 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes (50%) and 7 free-response questions — 3 long and 4 short — in 1 hour 45 minutes (50%). It's a hybrid digital exam, and calculators are permitted.

Which AP Chemistry units are weighted most?

In the College Board's current unit list, Properties of Substances and Mixtures is 18–22% and Acids and Bases is 11–15%; the other seven units are each 7–9%.

Can it read chemical equations in my notes?

Yes, if they're typed as text. Equations inserted as images aren't read — type them into your notes first.

Does it generate calculation problems?

Practice questions focus on the concepts in your material (multiple choice and short answer). Use your problem sets and released free-response questions for calculation practice.

Is it free?

You can make 2 guides a day without an account, or 10 a month after signing in with Google.
