MCAT

MCAT Study Guide Maker

The MCAT draws on a lot of coursework at once. According to the AAMC, the exam has four multiple-choice sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems (59 questions, 95 minutes); Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, or CARS (53 questions, 90 minutes); Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems (59 questions, 95 minutes); and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior (59 questions, 95 minutes). Total content time is 6 hours 15 minutes, and seated time is about 7 hours 30 minutes. Each section is scored 118–132, for a total of 472–528.

The science sections draw on introductory courses in general and organic chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, psychology and sociology, and most questions are passage-based. CARS requires no specific content knowledge.

Study Guide Maker helps with the content review: upload your prerequisite course slides, text-based PDF notes, Word docs or typed notes, choose the College level, and get guides with key concepts tagged to the page they came from, a glossary, practice questions and flashcards. Pair your guides with the AAMC's official practice materials for passage-based practice.

Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration is how cells turn the chemical energy in glucose into ATP. It happens in three stages — glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain — and releases carbon dioxide and water as by-products.

  1. 1. Overview of cellular respiration

    • Overall equation: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 → 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (ATP + heat).p. 1
    • Aerobic respiration needs oxygen and yields far more ATP than fermentation.p. 1
  2. 2. Glycolysis

    • Glucose is split into two pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm, producing a net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH.p. 2
    • Glycolysis does not require oxygen.p. 2
  3. 3. Krebs (citric acid) cycle

    • Takes place in the mitochondrial matrix; each acetyl-CoA produces 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, 1 ATP and 2 CO2.p. 3
  4. 4. Electron transport chain

    • Located in the inner mitochondrial membrane; NADH and FADH2 donate electrons that pump H+ ions and drive ATP synthase.p. 4
    • Oxygen is the final electron acceptor and forms water.p. 4
